Want to learn some new techniques using watercolor and colored pencil to make exciting pieces of art? In this class students will learn techniques combining watercolor and colored pencil to create exciting new art. We will work on a variety of subject matter from the Plant and Animal Kingdoms as well as objects found in everyday life. The class is made up of demonstrations, exercises, discussion, critique, and work time. Please check the DAC website for supply list. Kate Lagaly, Instructor 20W111.1 Thursdays, 12:30 PM – 3:30 PM January 9 – February 6 (5 weeks) $135 or two payments of $67.50 Foundational Watercolor Through simple exercises and repetition, this class will focus on breaking through the potential frustrations of watercolor in order to leave you with a comfort and fluency in the medium. Students will learn the fundamentals, from controlling how much water is in their brush to painting with negative space. We will begin with basic exercises, and then move to painting objects from life. There will be no pencil drawings in this class; instead, the focus will be on learning various techniques to build a painting without relying on a drawing. While we will be working from still life setups, the techniques in this class are applicable to any subject matter. This class is open to absolute beginners, as well as more experienced watercolorists who want to strengthen their fundamentals - the only requirement is that you have some experience drawing from life. Last spring, we learned from landscape masters and naturalists, a portrait artist and an abstract still life artist. This spring, we’ll turn to a different group of watercolor masters for inspiration. Together they will offer us a variety of subjects, styles, color strategies, materials and specific techniques. Each week we will LOOK… DIGEST…PRACTICE…ASSIMILATE. Weekly demos, group critiques and projects will guide our exploration.
